§ Introduction
Dr. T. R. Paarivendhar, known in earlier public records as T. R. Pachamuthu, was born on 24 August 1941 in Thandavarayapuram, a village near Attur in present-day Salem district, Tamil Nadu. He grew up in a farming family, studied mathematics at Jamal Mohamed College in Tiruchirappalli, and began his working life as a mathematics teacher.
From there he moved into coaching and then into building institutions. The SRM Group, which he founded in 1968, opened a school in K. K. Nagar, Chennai, in 1969. In 1985 it established SRM Engineering College at Kattankulathur. That college was recognised as a deemed university in 2002 and today operates as SRM Institute of Science and Technology, with campuses in Chennai, Tiruchirappalli and the Delhi National Capital Region. He is also Chancellor of SRM University, AP, established in 2017.
Beyond education, his public life has included work for the Tamil language through the SRM Tamil Perayam, founded in 2010, and electoral politics. He is the founder-president of the Indhiya Jananayaga Katchi and represented the Perambalur constituency in the 17th Lok Sabha from 2019 to 2024.

§ Three areas of work
Education is at the centre of his documented work. It began with a school in 1969 and grew into universities in Tamil Nadu and Andhra Pradesh, alongside SRM universities in Sikkim and Haryana. SRM’s official profile describes his aim as “empowerment through education”.
Institutions and contributionsThrough the SRM Tamil Perayam, established in 2010, SRM presents annual awards for the best Tamil books in twelve fields, along with prizes for scholars, researchers and Tamil forums. At the Perayam’s award function in January 2018, SRM reported a donation of ₹16 lakh towards a Tamil Chair at Harvard University.
Recognition and milestonesHe is the founder-president of the Indhiya Jananayaga Katchi. He contested the Perambalur Lok Sabha seat in 2014, 2019 and 2024, and was elected in 2019 as a candidate of the DMK-led alliance, serving until June 2024.
