About Dr. T. R. Paarivendhar

T. R. Paarivendhar was born on 24 August 1941 in Thandavarayapuram, a village near the town of Attur.^[1] At the time, the area was part of the Madras Province of British India. Today it lies in Salem district, Tamil Nadu. Published reporting describes his family as a modest farming household.^[4]

He was born six years before Indian independence. The large expansion of technical and higher education that followed independence, and that would shape his later career, had not yet begun. For a child from a farming village, going to college was far from certain.

His father’s name was Ramasamy.^[1][9] The initials SRM, used by every institution he later founded, stand for Shri Ramasamy Memorial.^[5] His own initials follow a common Tamil convention in which the first initial stands for a native place and the second for the father’s name: T for Thandavarayapuram and R for Ramasamy.^[1]

He studied for a Bachelor of Science in Mathematics at Jamal Mohamed College in Tiruchirappalli and completed the degree in 1962. His sworn election affidavit records the University of Madras as the awarding university, since the college was then affiliated to it.^[2]

He then earned an engineering qualification by the professional-membership route. It is recorded as membership of the Institution of Engineers, obtained through the Indian Institute of Engineering Technology in Kodambakkam, Chennai, in 1967.^[2][9]

Why the membership route mattered

The Institution of Engineers (India) runs its own examinations, widely known as AMIE. They let candidates, including diploma holders, earn a professional engineering qualification in stages instead of through a full-time degree course. Coaching institutes grew up in the cities to prepare candidates for these papers. His early work as an educator took shape in this field, as a teacher and then as the organiser of coaching centres.

For much of his career he was publicly known as T. R. Pachamuthu, and earlier reporting uses that name.^[4] He is now known as T. R. Paarivendhar. This is the name used in his institutional titles, in the parliamentary record for 2019–2024 and in his 2024 election affidavit.^[1][2]

The name has deep roots in Tamil literary history. Pāri, often called Vēl Pāri, was a chieftain of the Parambu hills in the Sangam age. Classical Tamil poetry, including the anthology Puṟanāṉūṟu, remembers him as a patron famous for his generosity, and the poet Kapilar is closely linked with him. Vēndhar is a Tamil word for king. The name also appears in the Paari School of Business at SRM University, AP.^[6]

One further statement of principle is reported from an event. At the SRM Tamilperayam award function on 31 January 2018, over which he presided, SRM reported that he “explained how the awardees have been selected based purely on their merit only without any bias”.^[7]

His public profile reaches beyond education. He founded the Indhiya Jananayaga Katchi, a regional political party in Tamil Nadu. Most sources date its founding to 2010, while some give 2011.^[4][8] He was elected to the Lok Sabha from Perambalur in 2019 and served from 23 May 2019 to 4 June 2024.^[1]
